The Eleventh Olympic Games, held in Berlin in 1936
The traditional competition had been awarded to Germany before the accession of Hitler to power. Germany used the event to present a sympathetic face of Nazism. Anti-Semitic propaganda was minimised and foreigners made welcomed. Although the success of the black American sprinter, Jesse Owens, embarrassed Hitler, who claimed the superiority of the white race, he could be proud with victorious German athletes. Germany won most gold, silver and bronze medals and a huge finale was staged, presenting the masses supporting Hitler.
